Anonymous 4 was an all-female vocal quartet known for performing medieval music, which was almost all originally written for male voices. In addition, they were a gold-standard early-music ensemble with a gorgeous blend. The Lily and the Lamb highlights their sonic beauty and shows how revelatory their explorations of medieval repertoire can be. The ghostly sequence “Salve virgo singularis” is the place to start.
