Atomic rodents who never quite burrowed out of the second tier, the Groundhogs (who would graduate to Mighty on their next album) nevertheless found some fun directions to go with the heavy blues on their fourth album. Inspired by guitarist/vocalist Tony McPhee’s panic attack the year prior, the four-part side A title suite goes through kaleidoscopic swirls as it tries to escape the anxiety spiral, taking the Delta sound to places John Lee Hooker never anticipated. Side B kicks off with their finest hour, “Cherry Red,” an urgent plea to a leaving lover that would later inform Earthless’s whole deal. The cherry on top of the split.
