The Turnaround

Released

Like its predecessor, No Room For Squares, this Mobley LP includes music from two sessions: one in March 1963 with trumpeter Donald Byrd, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Butch Warren and drummer Philly Joe Jones, and one from February 1965 with Freddie Hubbard, Barry Harris, Paul Chambers, and Billy Higgins. The opening title track may surprise some listeners, because Harris is often regarded as a bebop purist, but “The Turnaround” is a straight soul-jazz groove. Other tracks are more melodically intricate, and everything swings hard.
