They may never have achieved the profile of their contemporaries Stereolab or their regular gigging partners on the Birmingham scene Broadcast — but those who do love Pram love them every bit as much and deservedly so. They draw from the same pool of influences as their contemporaries: Krautrock repetition, spooky old British TV themes and sound effects, a little bit of Syd Barrett and the more strung-out end of C86 indie. But within that hermetic world, their personality is absolutely distinct and deeply compelling. On their debut album, they arrived fully formed, Rosie Cuckston’s deadpan “Brummie Nico” voice conjuring urban dreamscapes among the repetitions, and over just eight tracks it creates a fully realised world.
