Grunge’s punk roots might’ve gotten all the college radio/zine cred, but Soundgarden made it impossible to discount just how much it could grab you as a form of neo-psychedelic hard rock. Chris Cornell’s “what if Robert Plant was a monster truck” vox and Kim Thayil’s Iommi-tone guitar posit “dinosaur rock” as a complimentary term, and when they’re not grinding out the crunchiest riffs since metal dropped the “heavy,” they’re finding grace and tragedy in the sludge.
