Completely remarkable debut by composer Jack Sheen. Scored for a relatively large string and wind ensemble, Sub is blended with field recordings and slabs of white noise that make the entire thing feel like the breeze of consciousness itself, everything a twinned dance of notes and unknown presences. Imagine approaching a massive statue and closing your eyes but still sensing the outline of it through the pink of your lids. Further into the piece, the strings flurry up and it feels more like a composition, still rooted in the muck of something inescapable and natural.
