Static Tensions

Released

Two drum kits may make fitting on a club stage way more complicated, but in Kylesa’s case, the extra steel was worth it. Sludgy swamp dwellers from Savannah, Georgia, they evolved along similar paths as fellow bog monsters Baroness and Mastodon. By 2009, they were a fearsome machine, using their wall of percussion to blast a path through the muck. Static Tensions marked the peak of their heaviness — future records would still feature plenty of fuzz and trudge but not to this extent — and therefore their most satisfying moments. “Scapegoat” and “Unknown Awareness” both provide high watermarks for mayhem, but more ominous tracks like “Running Red” make the frontal assault through the glop all the more effective in contrast.
