Sleep, Engine Sleep

Released

Mapstation is the solo project of Stefan Schneider of To Rococo Rot and Kreidler. On early albums like Sleep, Engine Sleep, he shares an interest in gently colliding patterns and dub-wise electronic grooves, though they’re minimally sketched, as though you’re hearing everything from a distance. There’s only essence here, and anything superfluous has quietly slipped from the skeleton of these patient compositions. While it might share some surface attributes with the types of glitch-tronica that were circulating at the same time, Sleep, Engine Sleep draws from a wider language of electronic music, one that echoes the laboratory experiments undertaken both at Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s Black Ark in Kingston, Jamaica, and Cluster’s farmhouses in Forst, West Germany.
