On Shadows From The Album Skies – a 2005 album compiling two limited CD-R releases from the previous year – Andrew Chalk explores duration and drone, two threads that run throughout the prolific body of music he’s released over the past four decades. There’s a curious ‘laidback intensity’ to Chalk’s focus here, though. It’s hard to tell exactly what he’s using, though the music evokes the muted clang and ring of guitar fed through reverb and delay. Across one twenty-seven minute piece, and another forty-seven minute piece, Shadows gestates and mutates exceptionally slowly, the deep purr at the heart of both compositions allowing for a tessellation of high-pitched tones to cluster and disperse.
