Run Come Save Me

Released

When hip hop made its way across the ocean from the US to the UK, it found wide-open vistas of new musical influences — notably reggae (which, of course, was the tradition from which hip hop originally emerged). You can hear the fully-digested influence of reggae and dancehall all through this 2001 release from the brilliant Roots Manuva, although this is by no means a reggae album. It’s a deep, rich, and fully realized slab of British hip hop, with squidgy electro textures, block-rocking beats, and Roots Manuva’s chesty voice dancing nimbly across the top.
