Point of Departure

Released

Hill’s third Blue Note album to be released featured trumpeter Kenny Dorham; Eric Dolphy on flute, bass clarinet, and alto sax; tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson; bassist Richard Davis, Hill’s most consistent partner in these years; and drummer Tony Williams, just 19 at the time. The pianist gives the three horn players a lot of material to work with, and plenty of room to run, especially on the 12-minute opener, “Refuge.” Dolphy’s warped, wavering lines are particularly potent on the somewhat Charles Mingus-ish “Spectrum.”
