Derivative isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and Carmen Villain is drawing almost entirely on Jon Hassell’s work and the various versions of dub as seen by Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus. In a few slow moments, it feels like a good memory pedal workout, but the high points here featuring the live musicians are as good as the templates and sometimes go beyond. Really fucking good.
