Motown’s short-lived California label MoWest was briefly home to some of the most progressive music in the label’s history. Odyssey’s self-titled album, their only LP release, was a wonderful concoction of soul, funk, folk and country, blending hippie vibes, country strumming, jazz licks and solid Motown funk. There’s a wide range of musical influences on show here, but the mix of wah wah guitars, brass, congas, fatback drums and soul-keys meld with fuzz guitars, banjos and jazzy vocal lines to great effect.
