New Energy

Released

With a definite reduction in the centrality of the beats and a corresponding increase in prettiness in the chords and melodies, New Energy is a slight return to a more reflective sound after Four Tet’s club-influenced previous few albums, and the mood largely dwells in that bittersweet somehow-rustic electronica that he does so well, exceptions being the propulsive drive of the Detroit-esque SW9 9SL and the chiming techno of Planet.

There’s perhaps less experimentation here than on some of his other albums and more consolidation of what he does really well, particularly his ability to use certain textures, tropes and stylistic tics to pull his productions in contradictory directions, but this is no criticism, New Energy is a peaceful, calm, all-involving journey and one of Four Tet’s most accessible albums.
