The gloomy, ominous compositions Mick Harris releases as Lull typically manifest as quite lengthy tracks; his 1996 release Continue was a single hour-long piece, all vibrating drone and dark atmospheric hums like cosmic rays. This 1997 album is the exact opposite of that, consisting of 99 pieces lasting between five seconds and just under three minutes. When the album is played in sequence, they blend together seamlessly, but heard on shuffle, the differences between them become surprisingly stark; some offer a high-pitched hum, others juxtapose aa high and a low tone against each other, while still others sound like wind escaping an underground cave. No matter how you listen to it, though, it’s an extraordinarily immersive and even hypnotic work.
