Like a car crash put to tape, The Dillinger Escape Plan’s music was both horrifying and impossible not to stare at. Hard to pin down genre here besides just “excoriating noise,” but their combination of math metal, grind, and weird electronics (topped by Greg Puciato’s post-Patton conniptions) sounds like the album cover looks. “Phone Home” and “Unretrofied” give a little bit of respite with their NIN-style industrial rage. That breathing space makes this a more dynamic listen. Otherwise it’s impact after impact, “Sunshine the Werewolf” and “Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants” capturing some of the most devastating collisions they ever recorded.
