The first of three albums Angel-Ho released in 2022, Matriarchal Behavior hits hard and ominous from the start with “Boudoir Congregation” with its echoing tones, nervous melody and sense of looming threat. An all-instrumental release, the album excellently emphasizes how Angel-Ho’s forceful singing and lyrical presence is merely part of the whole, showcasing her electronic experimentation. There’s also various nods to a feeling of deep time: the echoing animal-like calls on “Paula (Posh),” the songtitles “Time Traveler” and “Living Ancestor.”
