Following up their astonishing debut full length In the Flat Field was a tall order for Bauhaus but it was fulfilled and then some with Mask, which split the difference perfectly between continuing their earlier approaches and trying out some new ones, particularly drawing on funk. That influence could readily be heard on songs like “Muscle In Plastic” and “Kick in the Eye,” while eerie horror-movie vibes on “Hollow Hills” and “The Passion of Lovers” had their own dark power, all culminating in the title track, a powerful dramatic conclusion for the album as a whole.
