Mahler: Symphony No. 6

Composer
Released

One of the rare classical recordings that, at its best, is magnetic enough to hold the interest of those outside the classical-music community. From the opening beats in the low strings, this Sixth is crisp, furious, and exciting. The performance makes Mahler’s tangled melodies and complicated musical discourse especially intelligible, even confrontational. The audio-engineering team is an important collaborator with Currentzis’ exacting hand, augmenting the clarity and precision already present in the playing. While some critics are unsatisfied with Currentzis’ vision, few argue with his ability to produce fresh and arresting readings of core symphonic repertoire.
