Live at Woodstock

Recorded

Creedence took the stage long after midnight at the Woodstock rock festival, after a late and extended Grateful Dead performance. They came out swinging; for most of this hour-long set, the songs are short and forceful, drummer Doug Clifford keeping the beat rock solid as John Fogerty’s lead guitar bites and stings. A mix of originals (“Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Born On the Bayou”) and R&B covers (“Ninety-Nine and a Half (Won’t Do),” “I Put a Spell On You”) keep the crowd happy and awake, but at the end, Creedence explodes — their versions of their own “Keep On Chooglin’” and Dale Hawkins’ “Suzie Q” are more than 10 minutes long each, head-down marathons (one fast, one slow) with Fogerty’s guitar set on stun throughout.
