Anyone among the very small batch of listeners that heard Pulp’s debut album in 1983 who would have predicted that the group would have ended up creating one of the most monumentally anthemic albums and tracks of the 1990s should be signed up for scientific research. It is quiet, yearning, simply sweet at points, very much the work of a clever young fellow and compatriots wanting to make a mark, sometimes goofily, like on the ersatz Dixieland swing of “Love Love” and sometimes with a surprising affect, which the elegantly sly “My Lighthouse” demonstrates.
