One of the 1990s’ most striking rock bands – besides more familiar rock instrumentation, the credits also include bouzouki, hammered dulcimer and thumb piano – Scotland’s Long Fin Killie made a remarkable debut with Houdini. The quartet were all skilled players but it was the astonishing ability of Luke Sutherland, possessed of both a striking falsetto and the ability to write fierce, startling, truly literary lyrics, that made songs like “Idiot Hormone,” “How I Blew It With Houdini” and – with a smart Mark E. Smith cameo – “The Heads of Dead Surfers” shine.
