Released

After their space ritual Dave Brock took over as captain of the starship Hawkwind and, despite losing longtime navigator Robert Calvert to the void, successfully steered the space rockers to a clean landing for their best studio album. It helped that he kept the songs concise and controlled. Even when “Psychedelic Warlords (Disappear in Smoke)” wanders off, Nik Turner’s sentient saxophone leads it back. Lemmy helps them find “Lost Johnny,” “D-Rider” could soundtrack the final sequence of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and “You’d Better Believe It” contains a pretty nifty Who single underneath the layers of stardust. They weren’t smoking meat on this grill, if you catch the drift.
