Echoing more the sounds of 70s krautrock pioneers Can and less the sound of a traditional jazz trio, Ghosted is a phenomenal showcase for multi-instrumentalist Ambarchi, bassist Berthling, and drummer Werliin. Recorded live in 2018, the first three of four tracks skitter and float across grooves that punch through ambient fog like a daisy through concrete. Whirling, jittery organs in “II” and “III” balance the eyes-forward and endless tempos of the bass and drums, while the short epilogue of “IV” provides a post-rock-tinged noirish denouement to its more energetic precursors. One of the more accessible entry points into Ambarchi’s vast discography, Ghosted is mysterious fun.

Here, Ambarchi’s striped feedback and ghost vapors team up with Werliin’s deliciously papery drums and Berthling’s hammering upright bass figures. Ambarchi really does love repetition and where another person hears a beat or two between the lines, Ambarchi sees entire vistas. Small and vital and indubitably alive.
