Forfolks

Released

Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker’s solo excursions, either by himself or with The New Breed, have ranged from avant-garde jazz jamming to fusion freakouts. 2021’s Forfolks is his most unadorned (just him, a guitar, a few pedals) and oddly his most approachable. The looping and performances are non-linear, but the effect is that of classic ambient records — from before they even had a name for it. Soft droning under jittery plucking, spliced-in city street recordings, it’s the kind of jazz guitar playing that you could use to trick your dad into getting into experimental music. Early morning music for late at night. Glorious.
