England Made Me

Released

The youngs won’t believe this but, in the Nineties, there was a fairly robust supply of singers from indie bands wandering around being wispy and charming all over the BBC. Record companies hypnotized by the promise of Massive Attack and Everything But The Girl began seeing soul icons in every be-cardigan’d graduate of the C86 wars. Cath Carroll, of Miaow fame, made one of the best fake Brazilian cabaret albums of this period: England Made Me. Best track: “Moves Like You (Remix). Weirdest track: “Train You’re On,” a kind of rewired samba with then-husband Santiago Durango and producer Steve Albini both making guitar noise that has zero place here (though it fits, very oddly).
