After the artistic triumph of 2015’s Hasta La Raíz, Natalia Lafourcade turned once again toward exploration of musical history, recording two stripped-down acoustic albums of classic and traditional Latin songs and the two-part Un Canto por México, on which she re-recorded some of her back catalog with special guests and interpreted more traditional material. De Todas las Flores, released in 2022, was her first album of all-new original material in seven years, co-produced by Adán Jodorowsky (son of legendary director Alejandro Jodorowsky and a musician in his own right) and featuring Marc Ribot on guitar on several tracks. It’s mostly acoustic, though the arrangements seem to get more lush as the album progresses. Recorded on tape, it blends samba, bossa nova, boleros, and other gentle and mournful Latin styles with country and early ’70s singer-songwriter folk-rock into a sweeping and romantic sonic landscape, the kind of album an artist makes when they have fully embraced life and are no longer attempting to inhabit anyone’s fantasies but their own.
