Cimarosa: Il matrimonio segreto

Released

As far as eighteenth-century comic opera goes, there are hundreds of recordings of the Mozart operas and not much else. Of the rest, one of the big names is Domenico Cimarosa (another is Amadeus villain Salieri), whose best-known piece is Il matrimonio segreto. Here it receives a big-name recording by Barenboim and the English Chamber Orchestra, one of the few times an opera like this has been blessed with significant resources. Cimarosa’s overture rivals that of Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro in its shimmering vitality.
