Though the new Jana Rush album, Painful Enlightenment, is a forceful statement, it’s also uneven—its artistic evolution portends better things to come. Rush’s Bleep Mix from August 2021, part of the left-field online store’s weekly DJ series, was released to promote the album, but it’s a statement unto itself: florid, jazzy, sourced from UK drum & bass as much as Chicago footwork, a neon-tinted version of the album’s darker hues.
