There are a few snarky reviews out there making reference to Beck and Gorillaz as antecedents or inspiration for this album, which only makes sense if you listen to the first track and then, like, stop listening. This is an LA album, though, recorded and mixed there, and with LA players. What it sounds like is a late Nineties rock record strained through Cale’s melodic sensibility, a dark and chunky and satisfying thing.
