This superlative 1973 set from Curtis Mayfield features seven tracks of socially conscious soul and funk. The title track is a string-soaked paean to soldiers returning home from Vietnam and the whole album sees Mayfield toeing a line between optimism and gritty realism. There’s some deep funk here like the highly orchestrated ‘Right On For The Darkness’ and the raw, sheer street-funk of ’Can’t Say Nothing’ and at other moments Mayfield’s pure falsetto rides over string-laden soul like album finisher ‘Keep On Trippin’’. Up there with some of Marvin and Stevie’s finest albums of the same period.
