At once an accomplished performance by a piano/bass/drums jazz trio from the mid-sixties and a now long-established and beloved holiday classic, A Charlie Brown Christmas has long since become a Christmas perennial thanks to Vince Guaraldi and company’s beautiful originals and striking reinterpretations of carols. The opening version of “O Christmas Tree” alone is breathtaking in its sweet, subtle beauty, while the many originals – the sparkling cascade of “Skating,” the dance party fun of “Linus and Lucy,” the almost tearful contemplation of “Christmas Time Is Here” – rapidly became standards in their own right.
