A Box Of Birds

Released

The Church hadn’t been averse to covers but with A Box of Birds they took the full-on plunge with an album of nothing but. The result was absolutely a treat and a half, with the mix of both familiar and slightly more obscure numbers showcasing roots and inspirations while all sounding perfectly like they could have been original Church numbers, suiting the band to a T. Among the highlights: the transformation of the Monkees’s “The Porpoise Song” into a near-shoegaze epic and the giddy romp through Hawkwind’s deathless “Silver Machine.”
